Sheikh Suroor bin Mohamed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Mall, UAE
In spite of the large number of enclosed shopping centres in neighbouring Dubai, Abu Dhabi, as a result of limited land availability, had no major enclosed shopping centres. Talbot Consultants was therefore retained to provide a full range of retail consulting services to assist in the development of a 200,000 sq. m. shopping centre component for The Abu Dhabi Trade Centre which is a major mixed-use project being developed by Sheikh Suroor on the Adma-Opco site in the heart of Abu Dhabi. Our initial tasking involved researching similar projects in Dubai and then provide concept and design input in a series of development team workshops co-ordinated by Cansult, the project managers. Our recommendation was that the mall should be the “main street” of the project and thus provide the key linkage between the five office, residential and hotel towers. Our subsequent tasking was to work as part of the Cansult/HOK design team to develop a viable retail plan for the approval of the Sheikh. Once that had been achieved we were then tasked to provide the retail consulting input for the detailed financial feasibility study being prepared by Ernst & Young. The project has recently been completed.
